Abstract
The elderly patients who visit dental clinic are increasing annually. They are mostly suffering from some systemic diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders with polypharmacy. Also, they show compromised pharmacodynamic-pharmacokinetic function, decreased gag reflex-pulmonary function, nutrition-driven immune deficiency and the lack of manual dexterity due to aging. Furthermore, there is a severe distorted and atrophied alveolar bone, dry mouth and/or burning sensation in their oral cavity. In terms of optimal oral rehabilitation, these make it difficult to communicate with them, control their behavior, prescribe dental medication, deliver a comfortable denture, manage oral hygiene, and follow regular check-up. However, despite of these limitations, recent long-term outcomes of dental implants placed in these elderly indicate that implant assisted oral rehabilitation is favorable, encouraging the quality of their daily and social life.
In this article, in addition to the elderly friendly implant surgery, a variety of systemic and local factors will be reviewed for
optimal oral rehabilitation using dental implants.
